Hip hop has developed into one of the most influential musical genres and cultural influences in the world, moving from the street corner to the global stage. Discover important moments in the history of hip hop and its rapid development.

What Is Rap – Hip Hop?

Hip hop is a cultural movement that embraces several forms of art in addition to music. Hip hop culture is characterized by four fundamental components. DJing/turntablism, MCing/rapping, B-boying/breaking, and visual/graffiti art were the first four basic tenets of hip hop. These means of expression have also grown into further subcultures that have left enduring influences.

A cultural revolution that swept quickly over the world was also produced by the convergence of these four factors. Hip hop culture has influenced a variety of fields outside music, including fashion, technology, art, entertainment, language, dance, education, politics, and media. Hip hop is still a popular culture phenomena across the world today, inspiring both younger and older generations to create new creative forms.

Rap – Hip Hop Culture Origins

The Bronx in New York City, during the early 1970s, was the birthplace of the hip hop subculture and art movement. Its growth was a reflection of the detrimental impacts of post-industrial decline, political debate, and a dynamic economy.

Businesses shut down, eliminating several employment chances and entertainment options. As a result, urban adolescents started using the streets as a form of entertainment and self-expression. Block parties can be held in the parking lots and abandoned buildings. These block parties served as the foundation for many aspects of early hip hop culture. Mobile “Sound Systems,” a Jamaican cultural invention, were set up by DJs and MCs to provide the music. Brick walls were turned into canvases for graffiti, while sheets of cardboard served as dance floors for breakdancers.

Anger, hardship, and abandonment-related emotions helped to usher in a new age. But the burgeoning hip hop genre turned hopelessness and racial boundaries into a variety of artistic expressions. It also developed into a means of coping with violence.
