In America and Europe, rock music, usually referred to as “rock and roll,” first gained popularity in the 1950s. With a strong emphasis on the guitar, percussion, and forceful vocals, it is heavily influenced by earlier musical genres like the rhythm and blues music created by African American artists like Chuck Berry and Little Richard.

What is Rock music?

Popular music includes the genre of rock. In the United States and the United Kingdom, it emerged during and after the 1960s. When rock & roll first emerged, it all began in the 1940s and 1950s. Country and rhythm and blues music were the forerunners of rock and roll. Blues and folk music, for example, are connected to rock music in many ways. It is influenced by jazz, classical music, and other types of music.

Timeline of Rock music

Many distinct rock music subgenres had been created by the late 1960s. These featured fusions of jazz and rock as well as blues, folk, and country rock. The second part of the 1970s saw punk rock intensify and react against some of these developments, resulting in a raw, energizing style of music with overt political and social criticisms.

Today, a wide spectrum of musical genres—from light pop to heavy metal—are referred to together as “rock music.” The moniker has effectively evolved into a catch-all phrase for any kind of music that does not necessarily fall under an established umbrella term like R&B, country, or classical. Although much has changed since the days of Elvis Presley, the word may still be used to refer to both his songs and more contemporary bands like Nirvana or Pearl Jam.
